Typical PAUT of Fillet Welds

Fillet welds are widely used in profiles, large pressure vessels and KTY structures.For fillet welds with diversified structures, a dedicated fillet weld scanner is recommended for auxiliary scanning.On the one hand, the fillet weld scanner assists in data recording, facilitating subsequent data review and analysis.On the other hand, it maintains a constant scanning distance between the probe and the weld, which improves inspection efficiency while ensuring the accuracy of scanning data.

 

Probe and Scanner


       In this case, fillet joints with varying plate thicknesses are present at the inspection site, with a maximum thickness up to 77 mm. According to the actual workpiece conditions, a low-frequency D2 phased array probe paired with an angled wedge is adopted for shear wave oblique incidence testing. The probe and wedge are shown in Figure 1.

Figure 2 shows the MOS-02 TKY fillet weld scanner used for inspection. The extended support rods stabilize the relative position of the scanner during operation, enabling smoother and more continuous scanning data acquisition.

 

Inspection Performance


       Inspections were carried out on fillet joints with different plate thicknesses on site, and the results are shown in Figure 3 to Figure 6.

Conclusion


       The Doppler D2 series linear array probe combined with the MOS-02 scanner presents excellent inspection performance when testing this type of fillet weld.Doppler’s professional scanner team is capable of independently designing and developing a full range of scanners. Adopting a scanner tailored to the workpiece can double the inspection efficiency with half the workload.Doppler can also customize scanners of various specifications and dimensions according to customer demands, helping realize high-efficiency inspection.
